Meaning & source
Stern, heavily frowning: an intensive form of ʿabasa, “to frown”. Lisān adds that names of the lion such as ʿAnbas come from the same word.

وعَبَّسَ تَعْبِيساً، فَهُوَ مُعَبِّسٌ وعَبَّاسٌ إِذا كَرَّه وَجْهَهُ، شُدِّدَ لِلْمُبَالَغَةِ، فإِن كَشَر عَنْ أَسنانه فَهُوَ كالِحٌ، وَقِيلَ: عَبَّسَ كَلَحَ.
