About the words on the invitation

Two of the ḥadīth about the ʿaqīqah speak of a boy in their Arabic (al-ghulām, and “for him”), so they are translated that way and offered only when you choose “A boy”. The other lines fit any child, and one names a boy and a girl alike.

The Arabic of each line is copied from its source, never typed by us, and the English is our own rendering of the meaning. Its source is printed small beneath it, and a ḥadīth from outside al-Bukhārī and Muslim carries its grading and the scholar who graded it.

The Hijri date is calculated by the Umm al-Qurā calendar, so the card marks it “approx.”: the month your community keeps may begin a day earlier or later. The Arabic of your baby’s name appears only when the name is in our names list, where it is copied from a source.

For what the ʿaqīqah is, who it is for, and how the meat is shared, see the seventh day.
