The shore: “sāḥil: the edge of the sea”, so called, Lisān says, because the water scrapes (saḥala) it.

  • والسَّاحِل: رِيفُ الْبَحْرِ، فاعِلٌ بِمَعْنَى مَفْعُولٍ لأَن الْمَاءَ سَحَلَه أَي قَشَره أَو عَلاه، وَحَقِيقَتُهُ أَنه ذُو سَاحِلٍ مِنَ الْمَاءِ إِذا ارْتَفَع المَدُّ ثُمَّ جَزَر فَجَرف مَا مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ
